One tragedy and many memories

Tekst poświęcony jest analizie strategii pamiętania i zapominania o wypędzeniach i czystkach w grupach etnicznych. Przedstawię sposoby radzenia sobie z traumą przesiedleń w grupie łemkowskiej, zarówno tej części wywiezionej w 1947 roku na Ziemie Zachodnie w Polsce, jak i tych, którzy wcześniej, w latach 1944-46 wyjechali na Ukrainę. Pokażę jak ‘praca nad pamięcią’ może doprowadzić do redefiniowania i odbudowywania tożsamości wspólnotowej, ale też zaprezentuję, jak ta sama pamięć obumiera gdy grupa nie może jej ‘przepracować’. Wykażę znaczenie kontekstów społecznych warunkujących uruchamianie ram zbiorowego pamiętania.

The text is devoted to the analysis of the strategy for remembering and forgetting about expulsions and purges in ethnical groups. I will present the ways of dealing with the trauma of displacement in the Lemko group, including both those expelled to the Western Territories in Poland in 1947 and those who had left for Ukraine earlier in the years 1944-46. I will show how ‘working with memory’ can lead to the redefinition and rebuilding of community identity and how the same memory dies away when the group does not use it. I will demonstrate the importance of social contexts conditioning the launch of a collective memory framework.
