Connection between personality traits, accuracy and biases in the perception of a partner and the quality of romantic relationship.

In the study it was predicted that there would be connection between the partners’ personality traits, similarity of the partners, particular ways of the partner’s perception (accuracy, idealization, tendency to see the partner as similar to the self) and the quality of the relationship measured by the level of intimacy, passion and commitment of the partners. To test the hypotheses 50 dating couples were examined. The participants described themselves as well as their partners on the NEO-FFI scale and assessed the quality of their relationships on the Sternberg Triangular Love Scale. The results of the study in part confirmed the hypothesis. The partners’ similarity only with regard to extraversion was positively correlated with intimacy of the relationship. The data also showed that some personality traits of the couples were associated with the quality of their relationships. The actor effect was obtained for the conscientiousness and the partner effect for agreeableness and conscientiousness. The results also indicate a link between accurate perception of certain characteristics of the partner, idealization of the partner as well as tendency to perceive the partner as similar to the self, and the quality of the relationship. However the correlations were weak and the effects were obtained mainly for women.

W badaniu przewidywano wystąpienie związków pomiędzy cechami osobowości partnerów, podobieństwa partnerów oraz określonych sposobów percepcji osobowości partnera (trafność, idealizowanie, postrzeganie jako podobnego do siebie) a jakością związku wyznaczaną przez poziom intymności, namiętności i zaangażowania partnerów. W celu sprawdzenia hipotez przebadano 50 par pozostających w wolnych związkach, które opisywały siebie i partnera na skali NEO-FFI oraz określały jakość związku na Skali Miłości Sternberga. Uzyskane wyniki częściowo potwierdziły hipotezy. Podobieństwo partnerów tylko w odniesieniu do ekstrawersji było pozytywnie związane z intymnością w związku. Wykazano związek niektórych cech osobowości z jakością relacji romantycznych, uzyskano efekt aktora dla sumienności oraz efekt partnera dla ugodowości i sumienności. Wyniki wskazują także na pozytywny związek zarówno trafnego postrzegania pewnych cech partnera jak i idealizowania go, a także tendencji do postrzegania go jako podobnego do siebie, dla jakości związku. Uzyskane korelacje miały jednak niską siłę, a efekty ujawniły się głównie kobiet.
