Fligstein formulated the idea that the majority of Europeans will feel increasingly European by taking part in events which connect them to people and cultural phenomenons beyond their own national culture. Based on this assumption, this thesis establishes a link between people visiting a pop/rock music festival in a different country and their self-perceived Europeanness. In order to do so a theoretical background is laid by connecting previous research linking student exchanges and European identity with studies and theories tested on music as a form of symbol within culture and music festivals in particular. This theoretical framework was then tested with a quantitative study built upon data collected at three central European summer music festivals.
