„Nadzy i martwi” Normana Mailera: Filozoficzny komentarz na temat natury ludzkiej

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest tematyce powieści Normana Mailera „Nadzy i martwi.” Jest to dzieło przedstawiające działania wojenne podczas Drugiej Wojny Światowej na Południowym Pacyfiku. „Nadzy i martwi” to powieść na wskroś realistyczna, pisarz nie przedstawia wojny jako zrywu heroicznego, lecz jako wydarzenie, które odbija się negatywnym echem na psychice człowieka. Żołnierze z dywizji Cummingsa muszą zaklimatyzować się w nowym otoczeniu, co im się niestety nie udaje, ponieważ środowisko, w którym się znaleźli jest dla nich całkiem obce. Zwłaszcza dżungla napawa ich strachem, gdyż kryje w sobie wiele niebezpieczeństw. Nieznajomość terenu osłabia również gotowość bojową amerykańskich jednostek. Japońskie oddziały wojskowe, znając bardzo dobrze okolice mogą ich w każdej chwili podstępnie zaatakować. Mailer poświęca w swej powieści wiele uwagi zjawisku tzw. fali w wojsku, która polega na poniżaniu i znęcaniu się nad żołnierzami niższymi rangą w hierarchii wojskowej. Autorka pracy widzi w tym analogię do filozofii Nietzschego, który propagował koncept nadczłowieka. Mimo pozytywnych intencji jego idea człowieka pokonującego własne słabości została zinterpretowana przez Nazistów na własny użytek i wykorzystana w ich ideologii rasistowskiej. Norman Mailer ukazuje w swej powieści wielostronność ludzkiej natury, a także nie ocenia swoich bohaterów pod względem moralnym. Tym samym unika jakiejkolwiek formy radykalizmu, który doprowadził do wybuchu Drugiej Wojny Światowej poprzez ślepą i bezsensowną wiarę w ideologię Nazistów. W postawie Mailera można zauważyć wpływ filozofii Arystotelesa, starożytnego myśliciela, który postulował teorię „słusznego środka” (Delius, 16), według której ludzkość powinna unikać popadania w jakiekolwiek skrajności. „Nadzy i martwi” ukazuje wojnę jako siłę degradującą człowieczeństwo. Człowiek żyjący w ciągłym strachu o swoje życie nie jest w stanie funkcjonować normalnie. Jako osoba myśląca jest on zdolny do planowania przyszłości i realizowania swoich marzeń. Jednakże wojna odbiera wszelkie nadzieje, ponieważ niszczy duchowość człowieka.

Based on Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead, this thesis focuses on human behavior during war time. It analyzes the mental state of soldiers whose lives are constantly endangered. Men taking part in military operations can react in very different ways to certain situations and problems. First of all, they are not able to act reasonably because they are in constant fear for their lives. Also, there are specific relationships in the Army as commanders are in full control over their inferiors. The first chapter deals with the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, with an emphasis on his concepts of the superman and the will to power. Nietzsche’s work Thus Spake Zarathustra is mentioned because the protagonists of this philosophical treatise have counterparts in Mailer’s novel. The author of the thesis focuses on power abuse perpetrated by general Cummings and sergeant Croft. This issue is discussed in the second chapter. The sick desire to exert absolute power over other people can be best explained using the Nietzschean concept of the superman. Moreover, in soldiers’ everyday psychological struggle, evident for example in the repression of unpleasant emotions, one can detect the influence of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis. The third chapter is concerned with the multidimensional character of human nature. The presentation of the main characters in the novel does not follow explicit moral categories. Thus, each hero has both a positive and a negative side.Finally, the fourth chapter concentrates on the impact war exerts on the human being in general. The accumulation of negative emotions, such as fear, anxiety and tension destroys the man’s ability to think and behave reasonably. Stress that cannot be expressed leads to various mental problems, such as for example sleeplessness which is pervasive among the members of the division.All thing considered, war is always an indicator of an immense crisis in all aspects of life. Most often it is connected with financial turbulences and ideological anxieties. Norman Mailer’s, The Naked and the Dead is a novel about human nature. The author does not avoid depicting savage tendencies in man’s behavior, which may be repellent to some readers. Despite this, the novel is worth exploring as it provides valuable insight into the human psyche. Although the action of the novel is set in a specific period, evil is portrayed as a universal problem which applies to every human being.
