Niniejsza praca omawia sposób przedstawienia postaci tajnych agentów w A Scanner Darkly Philipa K. Dicka, Mother Night Kurta Vonneguta i The Little Drummer Girl Johna le Carré. Celem pracy jest wskazanie wpływu, jaki zawód szpiega miał na ich życie osobiste. Praca opisuje w szczególności konsekwencje (rozumiane jako koszty), jakie działania szpiegowskie miały na głównych bohaterach. Do kluczowych przykładów należą zaburzenia tożsamości i problemy osobiste bohaterów. The following thesis is concerned with the portrayal of secret agents in Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly, Kurt Vonnegut’s Mother Night and John le Carré’s The Little Drummer Girl. The purpose of the work is to depict the influence of their profession on their lives. In particular, the work discusses the consequences (in the meaning of costs) of espionage activities on the main characters, for instance identity problems and sacrifice of personal lives. When possible, the thesis also discusses ways of coping with the dilemmas and problems the main characters encounter while performing their jobs and analyzes whether those strategies proved to be effective. The purpose of introduction is to provide a very general look at the history of spying both in real life and in fiction. It also hints at the characteristic features of the profession of a secret agent. The second chapter is focused on the description of Bob Arctor, the protagonist of A Scanner Darkly, who falls victim to his profession: he started spying out of curiosity and ended as a living-dead, a slave to a drug industry. The third chapter contains the analysis of Howard W. Campbell, an artist who agreed on taking up the an intelligence mission to satisfy his ambitions and adopted numerous strategies to cope with feelings of guilt that resulted from his deeds. The next to last chapter discusses Charlie, the protagonist of The Little Drummer Girl, whose life was completely changed after she had taken up her clandestine mission. In the last chapter of the thesis the characters are compared and contrasted with each other in order to point out the similarities and differences between them. The analyses of Howard Campbell and Bob Arctor show that they ended up suffering greatly due to the course of events and emotions brought about by their spying actions. However, the case of Charlie depicts a more positive side of the profession: her secret mission helped her mature and find love.
