Changes in the organization of music and dance performances in Maninka population in the Haman region as an aspect of cultural change.

Praca dotyczy zmian kulturowych zachodzących u ludu Maninka zamieszkującego m.in. terytorium Gwinei w Afryce Zachodniej. Celem badania było ustalenie oraz opis przyczyn zmian zachodzących w sposobach organizowania performansów muzyczno-tanecznych w rejonie Hamanah. Zmiany te mają związek z takimi procesami jak: westernizacja, emigracja, uwidowiskowienie, zmiany w zatrudnieniu, komercjalizacja, islamizacja, wpływ obecności białych studentów, popularyzacja muzyki bębnowej na świecie i w Gwinei oraz zmiany legislacyjne. Stosując metodologię teorii ugruntowanej wygenerowano następującą hipotezę: w wyniku zmian w systemie kulturowym społeczności Maninka w rejonie geograficznym Hamanah doszło do zmian w sposobach organizowania performansów muzyczno-tanecznych (rozumianych jako przejście performansu z organizacji tajnej jow do jawnej ton lub grupy profesjonalnej, przejścia performansu z organizacji jawnej ton do grupy profesjonalnej, całkowitego zaniku performansu). Hipoteza została częściowo potwierdzona. Jako konsekwencję zmian w systemie kulturowym zaobserwowano przechodzenie performansów braterstw tajnych do zrzeszeń jawnych (klas wieku) oraz grup profesjonalnych. Udowodniono również przejmowanie performansów zrzeszeń jawnych przez grupy profesjonalne. Nie zaobserwowano natomiast definitywnego zaniku danych performansów.

Dissertation concerns the cultural changes taking place in the Maninka people cultural system residing in the territory of Guinea in West Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the causes of changes and to give a description of the changes, taking place in the way of organizing music and dance performances in the area of Hamanah in Guinea, inhabited by Maninka. These changes are associated with processes such as Westernization, emigration, move towards entertainment, changes in employment conditions, commercialization, islamization, the effect of the presence of western students, legislative changes, popularization of drum music in the world and Guinea. Using grounded theory methodology I generated the following hypothesis: as a result of changes in the Maninka people cultural system in the Hamanah geographical area there was a change in the way of organizing music and dance performances. This change was understood as a transition of performances of a secret organizations jow to public ton organizations or professional groups, the transition of performances of the public ton organizations to professional groups, complete disappearance of performances. The hypothesis was partially confirmed. As a consequence of changes in the cultural system, performances were observed to be passing from secret fraternities to public associations (age classes-ton) and professional groups. The acquisition of public associations performances by professional groups was also apparent. There was no evidence of the definitive loss of performances.
