O istocie i roli wariantywności języka na przykładzie wariancji składniowej współczesnej angielszczyzny

Linguistic variation is persistent and pervasive. It is everywhere in language, from the production and processing of individual sounds to the production and processing of utterances and larger texts. Also the grammars of the world's 7,000 or so languages exhibit extraordinary range and richness. In the functionalist tradition in linguistics, the significance of linguistic variables lies in their correlation with various extralinguistic factors, including demographic variables such as age, sex, region, social class, various social practices, interactional dynamics etc. The results of a recent quantitative, comparative analysis of syntactic variation in 46 present-day nonstandard varieties of English spoken around the world conducted by Kortmann and Szmrecsanyi (2004), some of which are presented here, revals that speakers of nonstandard English dialects exploit an impressive range of syntactic differences. At the same time, these differences stem mainly from variation in grammatical categories such as tense, person, number, negation and case marking. Morphologically-mediated, such variation concerns the idiosyncratic rather than the core grammatical phenomena of English. Moreover, Dorian's (1994) study of linguistic variation in a culturally and socio-economically homogeneous community of speakers of Scotish Gaelic living in the East Sutherland area has shown that linguistic variables need not co-vary with independent extralinguistic variables. This raises questions about the nature of linguistic variability and its significance for the human language faculty. Contrary to the popular view that the primary function of language is to enable communication, the results of Dorian's study suggest that the significance of linguistic variability lies rather in providing speakers with choice and enabling free, creative expression of thought and exercise of speakers' free will and intentionality.

W artykule rozważana jest istota wariantywności językowej oraz jej rola w ludzkiej zdolności językowej. Różnice między językami, jak również wewnętrzne zróżnicowanie języka na style i odmiany, zwykle tłumaczy się czynnikami pozajęzykowymi. Fakt, że językowa heterogeniczność nie musi się wiązać z kulturową i społeczno-ekonomiczną heterogenicznością użytkowników języka sugeruje, że u źródeł wariantywności języka, a tym samym u źródeł języka, leży twórczy, innowacyjny charakter mentalności człowieka, obejmującej jego zdolność językową.
