This paper discusses the issues related to the period of transition from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic in Europe, taking into account the cultural and anthropological changes which occurred during this period in the territory. Particular attention has been devoted to the anthropological identification of transitional cultures makers. The work is based on a wide range of current publications, dealing with the issue of the transition period, both anthropological and cultural. It is authors attempt to reconstruct the main issues of the transitional period by analyzing current available data. First chapter contains the general characteristics of the transitional period, the chronological framework and data on European climate during the transition. The second chapter is devoted to anthropological diversity. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the transitional cultures basic features, European Middle Paleolithic cultures from which the certain cultural elements evident in transitional inventories may have arrived. Chapters 4 through 6 contain descriptions of different cultures, together with data on the creators of these units. Chapter 4 has been devoted to Châtelperronian and Uluzian, Chapter 5 describes leaf-point cultures , while Chapter 6 describes the Aurignacian. Chapter 7 provides a summary of the collected information on both cultural diversity and anthropology, as well as the problems associated with the identification of the creators of cultures existing in Europe during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition.

Niniejsza praca porusza zagadnienia związane z okresem przejścia od środkowego do górnego paleolitu na terenie Europy, z uwzględnieniem przemian kulturowych i antropologicznych do jakich doszło w omawianym okresie na tym terytorium. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona identyfikacji antropologicznej twórców jednostek kulturowych funkcjonujących na terenie Europy w omawianym okresie. Praca powstała w oparciu o szeroką gamę aktualnych publikacji, poruszających kwestię okresu przejściowego, zarówno w wymiarze antropologicznym, jak i kulturowym. Stanowi próbę rekonstrukcji okresu przejściowego z uwzględnieniem wyżej wymienionych aspektów na drodze analizy najbardziej aktualnych, dostępnych danych. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera ogólna charakterystykę okresu przejściowego, jego ramy chronologiczne i dane dotyczące klimatu europejskiego w tym okresie. Rozdział drugi został poświęcony zróżnicowaniu antropologicznemu. Rozdział 3 zawiera ogólną charakterystykę kultur kręgu przejściowego, oraz kultur środkowopaleolitycznych, których elementy widoczne są w zespołach typu przejściowego, a także opis cech "behawioralnie nowoczesnych", które pojawiają się w inwentarzach kultur przejściowych. Rozdziały od 4 do 6 zawierają opisy poszczególnych kultur, wraz z danymi dotyczącymi twórców tych jednostek. Rozdział 4 poświęcono kulturze szatelperońskiej i uluckiej, rozdział 5 kręgowi kultur z ostrzami liściowatymi, natomiast rozdział 6 opisuje kulturę oryniacką. Rozdział 7 zawiera podsumowanie zebranych informacji dotyczących zarówno zróżnicowania kulturowego jak i antropologicznego, a także problemów związanych z identyfikacją twórców kultur funkcjonujących w Europie okresu przejściowego.
