Ethnic Interpretation of Wielbark Culture

The paper below is concerned with the study of ethnic interpretation of Wielbark culture. Its purpose is to conduct an analysis of views of contemporary scholars on the ethnic situation that prevailed in the Roman period in Pomerania, basing on the information contained in the ancient written sources of the Goths, Gepids, Rugiowie and Lemowiowie, Wends and Widiwariowie. Also, it raises the issue of the settlement and cultural continuity in Pomerania in younger pre-Roman times and during the Roman period, which allows to claim the presence of the indigenous people in that area. Furthermore, it presents the impact of Goths migration on a change of the territory occupied by Wielbark culture in her younger development phase. Basing on the above-mentioned studies and data provided by physical anthropology and linguistics, there has been made an attempt to interpret the ethnic of Wielbark culture.

Niniejsza praca dotyczy studiów nad interpretacją etniczną kultury wielbarskiej. Przeprowadzona została analiza poglądów współczesnych badaczy na sytuację etniczną, panującą w okresie rzymskim na terenie Pomorza, formułowanych na podstawie informacji zawartych w antycznych źródłach pisanych, dotyczących Gotów, Gepidów, Rugiów i Lemowiów, Wenedów i Widiwariów. Poruszono także problem kwestii ciągłości osadniczej i kulturowej na Pomorzu w młodszym okresie przedrzymskim oraz okresie rzymskim, co pozwoliło na stwierdzenie istnienia osadnictwa ludności autochtonicznej na owym obszarze. Przedstawiony został także wpływ migracji Gotów na zmianę zasięgu kultury wielbarskiej w jej młodszej fazie rozwojowej. W oparciu o wyżej wymienione badania oraz dane dostarczane przez antropologię fizyczną oraz lingwistykę podjęto próbę interpretacji etnicznej kultury wielbarskiej.
