Knowledge of the principles of the prevention of tropical diseases among nursing students in Cracow

Wstęp. W ostatnich latach obserwuje się wzrost liczby polskich turystów wyjeżdżających do krajów tropikalnych, który jest bezpośrednio związany z ryzykiem wystąpienia chorób tropikalnych. Aby zmniejszyć ryzyko utraty zdrowia podczas pobytu w odmiennej strefie klimatycznej należy właściwie przygotować osoby wyjeżdżające w podróż poprzez prowadzenie edukacji zdrowotnej na temat profilaktyki chorób tropikalnych.Cel pracy. Celem pracy była ocena stopnia przygotowania badanych osób do prowadzenia edukacji zdrowotnej w zakresie profilaktyki chorób tropikalnych.Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono metodą sondażu diagnostycznego na przełomie lutego i marca 2013 roku. Objęto nimi 150 studentów pielęgniarstwa CM UJ w Krakowie.Wyniki. Ponad połowa ankietowanych (55,3%) miała dostateczną wiedzę na temat chorób tropikalnych i ich profilaktyki. Zdecydowana większość (85,3%) badanych nigdy nie prowadziła edukacji zdrowotnej pacjentów na tematy związane z medycyną tropikalną. Aż 90% badanych uważało, że konieczne jest kształcenie pielęgniarek w zakresie medycyny tropikalnej, a ponad połowa ankietowanych (66,7%) chciałaby poszerzyć wiedzę w tym zakresie. Wnioski. Wiedza studentów pielęgniarstwa na temat chorób tropikalnych i ich profilaktyki jest niewystarczająca. Respondenci pragną poszerzyć wiedzę odnośnie profilaktyki chorób tropikalnych.

Introduction. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of Polish tourists travelling to the tropics, which is directly related to the risk of appearing tropical diseases. In order to lower the risk of the loss of one's health during the stay in a different climatic zone one should actually prepare people going on a journey by conducting the health education about the prevention of tropical diseases.Aim of the study. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of preparation of the respondents to conduct health education on the prevention of tropical diseases.Materials and methods. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey in February and March 2013. The study involved 150 nursing students of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow.Results. More than half of the respondents (55.3%) had adequate knowledge about tropical diseases and their prevention. The vast majority (85.3%) of respondents never led health education of patients on topics related to tropical medicine. As many as 90% of the respondents felt that it was necessary to educate nurses in tropical medicine, and more than half of the respondents (66.7%) would like to expand their knowledge in this area.Conclusions. The knowledge of nursing students about tropical diseases and their prevention is insufficient. Respondents want to expand their knowledge about prevention of tropical diseases.
