Alien, Distant, Different. The European East in the Eyes of the West

Present thesis concerns the attitude of the western countries towards Eastern Europe. It addresses the issue of the alienation of the East and the marginalisation of Eastern European countries' contribution to the european culture. The matter of the geographical and cultural borders of Europe and its regions is also addressed. The thesis discusses the european identity of the countries that lie on the border between Europe and Asia. The origins and meaning of the term "western civilisation" are explained. The thesis describes the history of the european integration and speculations about its future.

Niniejsza praca dotyczy stosunku państw zachodnich do Europy Wschodniej. Porusza problem wyobcowania Wschodu i marginalizacji wkładu państw wschodnioeuropejskich w kulturę europejską. Poruszone są kwestie geograficznych i kulturowych granic Europy i regionów europejskich. Praca dotyka tożsamości europejskiej państw znajdujących się na granicy Europy oraz Azji. Omówiona jest też geneza i znaczenie terminu "cywilizacja zachodnia". Opisana jest historia integracji europejskiej oraz prognozy na jej przyszłość.
