The humour of Boris Vian in polish translation through the example of "The Red Grass"

L’objectif de cette étude consiste à analyser la particularité de l’humour de Boris Vian et à examiner comment il a été transmis dans sa traduction polonaise. Nous nous concentrerons sur le roman « L’Herbe rouge » étant donné qu’il a été traduit par deux traducteurs différents et qu’il présente des aspects divergents, notamment en ce qui concerne le type d’humour. Nous analyserons l’image de l’auteur et de son style qui surgit de ses oeuvres traduites et à quel point les traducteurs ont réussi à garder l’esprit vianesque. A partir d’une analyse des procédés utilisés par les deux traducteurs de « L’Herbe rouge », ainsi que d’une comparaison des passages problématiques, nous démontrerons que les différences entre les deux versions polonaises prennent leur source dans le choix des stratégies de traduction ainsi que dans les visions diverses du lecteur projeté et du « skopos » de la traduction entière. Le but de cette étude consiste à démontrer que les deux traductions polonaises non seulement se différencient par le type d’humour, mais également sont consacrées au public différent.

Celem pracy jest analiza swoistości humoru Borisa Viana i sposobu w jaki został on przekazany w polskim tłumaczeniu. Problem jest rozpatrywany na przykładzie powieści „Czerwona trawa”, która została przetłumaczona przez dwóch różnych tłumaczy. Polskie tłumaczenia powieści znacznie od siebie odbiegają, szczególnie pod względem rodzaju humoru. Następnie przedstawiony został obraz autora i jego styl jaki wyłonił się z przetłumaczonej powieści, a także to, w jakim stopniu tłumaczom udało się zachować specyfikę Viana. Z analizy metod zastosowanych przez tłumaczy i porównania problematycznych fragmentów wynika, że przyczyną różnic między polskimi tłumaczeniami jest wybór strategii tłumaczeniowej oraz odrębne założenia tłumaczy dotyczące czytelnika projektowanego i „skoposu” tłumaczenia. Zamierzeniem tej pracy jest wykazanie, że polskie tłumaczenia nie różnią się wyłącznie rodzajem humoru, ale są także przeznaczone dla różnych czytelników.

The purpose of the following thesis is to analyze the specificity of the humour of Boris Vian and to examine how it was transferred in the polish translation. We will focus on the novel “The Red Grass” considering that it was translated by two different translators and it reveals apparent differences, especially in the case of humour. We will analyze the author’s style in his translated novel and verify up to which point the polish translators captured the spirit of Vian. Basing on the analysis of translator’s methods and on the comparison of problematic fragments, we will prove that the origin of the differences between polish translations is due to the translator’s choices of translation strategy, projected reader and to the different “skopos” of the entire translation. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that the polish translations not only differ on humour but are intended for a different public.
