Pragmatism according to William James

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej pt. „Pragmatyzm w ujęciu Williama Jamesa” było przybliżenie sylwetki amerykańskiego filozofia, jego głównych dzieł oraz najważniejszych zagadnień z zakresu pragmatyzmu, którego był współtwórcą. William James żył na przełomie XIX i XX wieku w Stanach Zjednoczonych i wniósł bardzo istotny wpływ w rozwój filozofii tego okresu – myśl pragmatyczna, której był wielkim popularyzatorem, wprowadziła nową jakość do wielu kierunków filozoficznych, szczególnie ontologii (pluralizm ontologiczny), epistemologii (empiryzm radykalny), psychologii, a także filozofii religii. Nowe spojrzenie autora na owe tematy wzbudziło wiele dyskusji już za jego życia, wielu też korzysta z jego dziedzictwa aż po dzień dzisiejszy.W rozdziale pierwszym omówiono pokrótce życie i najważniejsze dzieła Williama Jamesa, przedstawiono również genezę pragmatyzmu, podstawowe jego założenia oraz dyskusję jaką wywołał w filozofii.Rozdział drugi zawiera opis pragmatycznej teorii prawdy stworzonej przez Jamesa oraz jej krótką analizę przeprowadzoną przez zwolenników i oponentów.W ostatnim, trzecim rozdziale została przedstawiona charakterystyka głównych założeń pluralistycznej koncepcji pragmatyzmu Jamesa.Twórczość Williama Jamesa jest ważna dla całej historii filozofii, oferuje ciekawe rozwiązania i metody – niniejsza praca jest próbą ich rzeczowego omówienia.

The thesis entitled ‘Pragmatism by William James’ concentrates on the writings and life of William James, the American philosopher whose main works include the most important issues pertaining to pragmatism. William James lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th century in the United States of America and had a huge impact on the evolution of philosophy of that time. The issue of pragmatism, whose great promoter he was, introduced a new quality to many fields of philosophy, especially ontology (ontological pluralism), epistemology (radical empiricism), psychology and philosophy of religion. His new look on these sparked a lot of discussion already in his lifetime, and many use this heritage to this day.Chapter one briefly discusses the life and the most important works of William James. It also presents the origins of pragmatism, its assumptions and the controversy it has created in philosophy.Chapter two describes the pragmatic theory of truth developed by James and a brief analysis thereof conducted by its followers as well as by its opponents.The last, third chapter presents the main assumptions of James’s pluralistic conception of pragmatism.The works of James are of great importance to the whole history of philosophy. They offer interesting solutions and methods. This thesis aims at discussing them thoroughly.
