"The Other City by Michal Ajvaz as an example of magical realism in czech literature"

The aim of this dissertation is to show „The Other City”, the book of Michal Ajvaz, in connection with magical realism in world literature and Czech literary tradition. In theoretical part of this work the history, main techniques and functions of magical realism are described. In the second part „The Other City” is analysed as an example of this literary trend. The evidences can be found in the specific language and style (rich metaphores, complex and sometimes almost incomprehensible language, use of irony and grotesque) and in the structure of the novel (the plot is not linear – it is created of the episodes which are not necessarily logically connected and it is underlined that the role of the plot or the character is limited). Magical realism is a type of meta textual and authotematical literature, where the game with the reader is one of the author's main goals. Philosophical background cannot be underrated - „The Other City”, like majority of the novels of magical realism, rises a question of the ontological status of the world and the human ability to discover and understand it.The novel is strongly connected with Czech literary tradition, which is proved by the use the motive of magical city Prague. This topic was popular in the Czech literature of XX century, in works of Franz Kafka, Gustav Meyrink and Daniela Hodrová. The author managed to combined one of the most important trend of world literature in XX century with tradition of his national background and filled the novel with philosophical questions and problems of literary theory and theory of language. Thanks to this he created multidimensional book which can be analysed on many levels, and magical realism is only one of the inspirations. 

Praca jest próbą opisania związków twórczości Michala Ajvaza z nurtem realizmu magicznego. Podstawą do analizy jest powieść czeskiego pisarza Inne miasto, w której odnaleźć można odwołania zarówno do światowej tradycji literackiej nurtu realizmu magicznego jak i do motywów popularnych w literaturze czeskiej.Teoretyczna część pracy została poświęcona historii realizmu magicznego oraz jego cechom charakterystycznym i funkcjom w literaturze. Dalsze rozdziały zostały poświęcone analizie powieści, która ma na celu przedstawienie jej związków z realizmem magicznym. Bezpośrednie nawiązania do tego nurtu występują na poziomie językowym (bogaty język, rozbudowana metaforyka, podkreślenie wagi szczegółu), w konstrukcji powieści (epizodyczność, nielinearność akcji, podrzędna rola fabuły) oraz na poziomie filozoficznym (refleksja nad istotą rzeczywistości i możliwościami poznawczymi człowieka).Realizm magiczny w „klasycznej” latynoamerykańskiej formie (zwłaszcza twórczość J. L. Borgesa) nie był jedyną inspiracją dla czeskiego pisarza. Inne miasto silnie nawiązuje do czeskiej tradycji literackiej, zwłaszcza do motywu Pragi magicznej, do którego szczególnie chętnie sięgali pisarze dwudziestowieczni (Gustav Meyrink, Franz Kafka, Daniela Hodrová). Powieść nasycona jest również odwołaniami do filozofii europejskiej (psychoanaliza, fenomenologia) oraz rozważaniami teoretycznoliterackimi. Dzięki takiemu połączeniu pisarzowi udało się stworzyć dzieło w obrębie nurtu magicznego realizmu bardzo oryginalne, które jednocześnie wychodzi poza jego ramy i dopuszcza różne interpretacje. Realizm magiczny jest więc tylko jednym z kluczy interpretacyjnych, choć z pewnością znaczących i nie dających się pominąć.
