From humble politics to imperial presidency.' The transformation of George W. Bush's leadership style after 9/11.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the transformation of George W. Bush’s style of presidency into imperial leadership after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. My two major intentions are to determine to what extent his presidency was imperial, and to identify the reasons and possible consequences of this particular style of presidency. The first chapter is devoted to the explanation of the concept of imperial presidency. The second one discussed Bush’s biography and his non-imperialistic attitude towards politics prior to 9/11. Then, the president’s transformation into an imperial leader is presented, along with personal and external factors that contributed to the process. The following chapter discusses the scope of his imperialism. This goal is achieved through the analysis of his most contentious imperial actions and decisions, concerning both domestic issues and foreign affairs. The last chapter deals with the imperial character of the United States of America, and identifies possible consequences of its imperial ambitions. This study indicates that George W. Bush was not merely an imperial president, but a president with imperial ambitions of the global empire. Thus, his attitude stemmed not only from his personal potential and external influences, but also from the character and the history of the country, of which he was a leader.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie transformacji, jakiej uległ styl rządzenia George’a W. Busha w wyniku ataków terrorystycznych z 11 września 2001 roku. Próbuje ona ustalić stopień i przyczyny jego przemiany, oraz przewidzieć konsekwencje takiego sposobu rządzenia. Pierwszy rozdział tej pracy jest poświęcony wyjaśnieniu genezy i znaczenia pojęcia imperialnej prezydentury. Drugi przedstawia biografię prezydenta oraz jego antyimperialne nastawienie do polityki przed 11 września 2001 roku. Następnie, omówiona jest jego przemiana w imperialnego prezydenta, z uwzględnieniem zarówno osobistych, jak i zewnętrznych czynników, które wpłynęły na ten proces. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony jest analizie zakresu imperializmu Busha. Aby osiągnąć ten cel, omówione zostały najbardziej kontrowersyjne działania prezydenta, w ramach zarówno spraw wewnętrznych, jak i polityki zagranicznej. W ocenie imperialnej prezydentury George’a W. Busha uwzględniony został również imperialny charakter Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki. Niniejsza praca ukazała, że przemiana Busha w imperialnego przywódcę po atakach terrorystycznych w 2001 roku wynikała nie tylko z jego osobistych ambicji i wpływów, ale również z imperialnego charakteru państwa.
