The Loneliness of the Individual and Its Rendition in Virginia Woolfs Fiction

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza sposobów realizacji motywu samotności jednostki w wybranych utworach Virginii Woolf: Do latarni morskiej, Pani Dalloway oraz Fale. Analiza została dokonana na podstawie wybranych tekstów krytycznych dotyczących okresu modernizmu w literaturze angielskiej, w szczególności zaś twórczości Virginii Woolf w latach 1925 - 1931. Każdy z trzech rozdziałów niniejszej pracy poświęcony jest jednej z wymienionych wyżej powieści; szczególną uwagę poświęcono głównym bohaterom utworów, ich jednostkowej tożsamości, relacjom ze sobą nawzajem oraz ze społeczeństwem, w którym żyją, a także problemowi języka jako nieefektywnego środka komunikacji. Analiza przeżywanego przez bohaterów poczucia samotności, odosobnienia, towarzyskiego lub społecznego wyizolowania połączona jest z przedstawieniem relacji między poszczególnymi osobami oraz zarysowaniem problemu budowania indywidualnej tożsamości jednostki.Analiza trzech powieści Virginii Woolf pokazuje, że poczucie osamotnienia może mieć negatywny wpływ na człowieka, jednak nie zawsze musi, a w przypadku większości bohaterów książek omawianych w niniejszej pracy wpływ ten jest zdecydowanie pozytywny. Bohaterowie Do latarni morskiej, Pani Dalloway oraz Fal dokonują w samotności przełomowych dla siebie odkryć dotyczących życia, śmierci, wolności – i siebie samych.

The topic of this thesis is the loneliness of the individual and the rendition of this theme in selected works by Virginia Woolf: To the Lighthouse, Mrs Dalloway and The Waves. The analysis is based on selected critical writings concerned with the modernist literature in England, especially with the works of Virginia Woolf between 1925 and 1931. The thesis consists of three chapters, each of which is devoted to a single novel; the main points of focus are the protagonists of the given book, their individual identity, their relations with one another as well as with the society they live in, and the problem of language as an ineffective means of communication. All interpersonal relations are analyzed in the context of the sense of loneliness, solitude, detachment and social isolation that the characters experience. The thesis also examines how the state of loneliness affects the process of shaping individual identity.The conclusion of the thesis is that the state of loneliness may indeed sometimes have negative impact on the individual, however – surprisingly – it most often affects the characters’ lives in a positive way: it can trigger the artistic process, bring about a moment of being, or enable the individuals to see the truth about life, death, freedom and themselves.
