Wanderers 'A8': journeys of hope from Poland in films and TV series

Niniejsza praca dotyczy współczesnych europejskich wędrowców z polskiego kręgu kulturowego oraz ich wizerunku w europejskich filmach i serialach. Celem pracy jest usystematyzowanie oraz pogłębienie refleksji nad tym, w jaki sposób europejscy twórcy filmowi i ekipy telewizyjne, przedstawiają na ekranie zjawisko polskiej migracji na terenie Unii Europejskiej od historycznej już daty 1 maja 2004 roku. Sztuka filmowa oraz telewizyjna w pewnym stopniu odzwierciedla, kształtuje oraz deformuje współczesny fenomen masowych wędrówek i przesiedlania się Polaków do "starych" krajów wspólnoty europejskiej. Migracyjne zdarzenia i odczucia są ukazane na ekranie zarówno w formie udramatyzowanej fabularnej fikcji, jak i dokumentalnej kroniki. Pierwszy rozdział dotyczy zjawiska migracji w perspektywie globalnej oraz europejskiej. Drugi rozdział dotyczy specyfiki polskiej migracji poakcesyjnej. W celu przybliżenia problemu, autorka korzysta z dotychczasowego dorobku reprezentantów poszczególnych dziedzin: filozofii, socjologii oraz antropologii. W rozdziale trzecim podjęta zostaje refleksja nad filmami migracyjnymi, dotykającymi, mniej lub bardziej, zjawiska polskiej wędrówki poakcesyjnej. Rozdział czwarty przybliża paradygmaty filmoznawstwa i medioznawstwa, rozważa fenomen kultury popularnej, telewizji oraz seriali telewizyjnych. W rozdziale piątym podjęta zostaje analiza i interpretacja odbioru pierwszego europejskiego serialu o emigrantach Londyńczycy.

The Master Thesis is concerned with both, the contemporary European travelers from Polish cultural background and their image in the European films and series. The aim of this paper is to systematize and deepen the reflection on how the phenomenon of Polish migration to the European Union from the now-historic date of May 1, 2004, is reflected onscreen by European filmmakers and television crews. Both, the film and television art, to some extent, reflects, shapes and distorts the contemporary phenomenon of mass migration and resettlement of Poles to the "old" countries of the European community. Migration events and feelings are shown onscreen, both in the form of dramatized narrative fiction and documentary records. The first chapter deals with the phenomenon of migration in the global and European perspective. The second chapter explains the specificity of the post-accession Polish migration. In order to present the problem, the author uses the existing research in philosophy, sociology and anthropology. The third chapter reflects on the films concerning the phenomenon of contemporary Polish migration. The fourth chapter introduces the paradigms of, both film and media studies. It is focused on the phenomenon of the popular culture, television, and television series. The audience reception of the first European series about immigrants in London is analysed in the fifth chapter.
