W pogoni za prawdą w fikcji: Analiza opowiadań Ernesta Hemingwaya i Tima OBriena

Zgodnie z arystotelesowską zasadą mimesis, autor zakłada, że beletrystyka jest formą sztuki, która naśladuje rzeczywistość. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie dążeń pisarza do przekazania prawdy zawartej w formie opowiadań. Autor niniejszej pracy magisterskiej zwraca również uwagę na sposób, w jaki czytelnik wyodrębnia pewne prawdy z opowiadań. Ważnym elementem analizy jest rozróżnienie prawdy estetycznej i emocjonalnej od prawdy definiowanej naukowo i konceptualnie.Do analizy zostały wybrane opowiadania Ernesta Hemingwaya oraz Tima O’Briena. Oceniono podejście Hemingwaya i O’Briena do tego jak literatura powinna przedstawiać prawdę. W pracy przedstawiono pokrótce biografię obydwu pisarzy, w celu pokazania jak wydarzenia z własnego życia ukształtowały ich poglądy nie tylko dotyczące pisarstwa, a także sposobu obrazowania prawdy w literaturze. W pracy wykorzystano następujące teorie i metody: prawdę literacką (literary truth), prawdę estetyczną, zaniechanie, przeciwstawne prawdy "happening-truth" oraz "story-truth", literacki minimalizm, metafikcję, oraz analizę struktury opowiadania. Wspomniana metodologia umożliwia bliższe poznanie prawdy w opowiadaniach i pozwala nakreślić wyrazisty obraz fikcyjnej rzeczywistości oraz stanu kondycji ludzkiej.

It is through Aristotle's "mimesis" that this thesis will argue that fiction is a form of art that aims to imitate reality. The goal is to portray the author's pursuit of conveying truth through the form of the short story. Likewise, the approach to short stories and the methods of how the reader should extract certain truths shall also be considered. It is important to acknowledge that the truth being questioned shall be of an aesthetic, emotive, and non-rational condition and not that of its scientific and conceptual counterpart.The short stories I have chosen to discuss will be selected from the works of Ernest Hemingway and Tim O'Brien. Both authors' critical approaches as to how fiction should portray truth will be evaluated. This thesis shall also briefly mention the backgrounds of both writers and investigate as to how past events helped shape their views and beliefs not only on writing itself, but their overall pursuit of portraying truth through fiction.The theories and methodologies that I will use shall be that of literary truth, aesthetic truth, omission, happening-truth versus story-truth, literary minimalism, metafiction, and an analysis of how a short story is generally structured. With these critical approaches in mind one may arrive closer to obtaining the truth of a short story and more clearly view its propositional, fictional account of reality and the human condition.
