The scholastic reinterpretation of obligatory readings: "In Desert and Wilderness" by Henryk Sienkiewicz

My master’s thesis study the situation of the obligatory reading In Desert and Wilderness by Henryk Sienkiewicz at the modern didactics of Polish language and literature in the primary school. At the first chapter of the thesis there are described debates on the canon of obligatory readings and controversy which the novel In Desert and Wilderness arouses, there is also presented the post-colonial reinterpretation of this book. The second chapter of my thesis is the researching part. Based on the analyze of my research (among students and teachers) there is created the picture of the situation of the obligatory reading In Desert and Wilderness in three primary schools in Warsaw and it’s imediate environs . The last part of the thesis contains concrete and original lesson scripts on subjects conected with the novel that are very important but unfortunately rarely brought up in schools.

Niniejsza praca bada sytuację lektury W pustyni i w puszczy Henryka Sienkiewicza we współczesnej dydaktyce języka polskiego w szkole podstawowej. W pierwszej części rozprawy opisane zostały dyskusje toczące się wokół kanonu lektur szkolnych, kontrowersje, jakie współcześnie budzi powieść W pustyni i w puszczy, przytoczona również została postkolonialna reinterpretacja dzieła Sienkiewicza. Przedmiotem drugiej części pracy jest przedstawienie wyników badań przeprowadzonych wśród uczniów i nauczycieli. Ich celem było zbadanie statusu lektury W pustyni i w puszczy i podejścia do niej w trzech szkołach podstawowych z Warszawy i okolic. Ostatnia część rozprawy zawiera oryginalne propozycje scenariuszy lekcyjnych na ważne a rzadko poruszane tematy związane z powieścią Sienkiewicza.
