Miecz japoński - broń wojownika czy dzieło sztuki?

Autor stara się skonfrontować ze sobą dwa sposoby postrzegania nihontō (miecza japońskiego) na przestrzeni wieków: jako broni wojownika i jako dzieła sztuki. W pierwszym rozdziale zarysowana zostaje historia miecza japońskiego, ewolucja broni oraz przemiany gospodarcze i społeczne z tym powiązane. W rozdziale drugim i trzecim autor omawia najważniejsze aspekty charakteryzujące miecz japoński kolejno jako broń i rękodzieło artystyczne. Uwaga zostaje poświęcona m.in. zastosowaniu w walce, znaczeniu dla społeczeństwa, etykiecie i rytuałom oraz technice wykonania ostrza i oprawy. Ostatecznym celem jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie zawarte w tytule pracy.

The author tries to confront two ways of perceiving nihontō (the japanese sword) throughout the ages: as a weapon of a warrior and as a piece of art. The first chapter describes the history of the Japanese sword, it's evolution and economic and social transformations related to it. In the second and third chapter the author discusses the most important aspects characterizing the japanese sword as a weapon and as an artisanal handicraft. Attention is directed at it's use in battle, impact on society, etiquette, rites and the techniques of manufacturing the blade and the mountings. The main goal of the study is to try to find the answer to the question included in it's title.
