Celem pracy jest analiza wizerunku obcokrajowców w drzeworytach japońskich epoki Edo i Meiji na tle historyczno-politycznym, która obejmuje charakterystyczne cechy przedstawień ludzi z Zachodu w drzeworytach ukiyo-e, skupiając się na ilustracjach z Nagasaki oraz Yokohamy. Pytanie, które powraca w pracy, to czy wizerunek człowieka Zachodu jest realistycznym przedstawieniem czy kreacją artysty. Analizie poddany jest wygląd zewnętrzny, charakterystyczne motywy oraz technika malarska. Istotną częścią pracy jest tło historyczne, które pomaga w zrozumieniu jak postrzegano obcokrajowców.

The goal of the paper is the analysis of the image of Westerners in japanese woodblock prints from Edo and Meiji era on a historical background. The analysis focuses on distinctive features of how Westerners were depicted in ukiyo-e woodblocks, mainly in prints from Nagasaki and Yokohama. The main problem is the question if those depictions were a reflection of reality, or a creation of the artist. The analysis consists of appearance, themes and painting technique. Historical background is very significant, since it helps to understand how Westerners were perceived.
