Celem pracy jest przedstawienie poszukiwań tożsamości w pisarstwie powieściowym Patryka Modiano. Pierwszy rozdział ukazuje złożoność i rozwój gatunku autobiograficznego oraz próbuje zdefiniować pisarstwo autora. Następnie, analiza dotyczy charakterystyki poszukiwań tożsamości w powieściach Patryka Modiano oraz autobiograficznych i autofikcyjnych cech jego pisarstwa. Kolejna część skupia się na jednym z dzieł autora: Ulicy Ciemnych Sklepików. Konkluzja jest porównaniem pisarstwa Patryka Modiano i Marcela Prousta.

L’objectif de ce mémoire de maîtrise est de présenter la quête identitaire dans l’écriture romanesque de Patrick Modiano. La première partie de cette étude montre la complexité et l’évolution du genre autobiographique. Elle essaie de définir l’écriture de Patrick Modiano. Ensuite, l’analyse porte sur les caractéristiques de la quête identitaire dans les romans de Patrick Modiano et sur la nature autobiographique et autofictionnelle de son écriture. Cette partie se concentre sur l’une des œuvres de l’auteur : Rue des Boutiques obscures. Le dernier chapitre est une comparaison de l’écriture de Patrick Modiano et de Marcel Proust.

The purpose of the following master thesis is to describe the quest for identity in the novel writing of Patrick Modiano. The first chapter presents the complexity and the development of the autobiographical genre. It tries to define the writing of Patrick Modiano. The analysis deals with the characteristics of the quest for identity in the novels of Patrick Modiano and the autobiographical and autofictional features of his writing. The following part focuses on one of his work: Missing Person. The last section compares the writing of Patrick Modiano and Marcel Proust.
