Words into movement: intersemiotic translation of “Romeo and Juliet”with a particular focus on kinesics

The aim of this thesis is to prove that intersemiotic translation from two systems different from each other on the microlevel is feasible. The subject of the analysis is a popular drama entitled “Romeo and Juliet”. The source text of the thesis constitutes the written text produced by William Shakespeare while the target text is a ballet choreography created by Kenneth MacMillan. Special attention will be drawn to the passages that describe gestures and movement and their equivalents in the target text will be analyzed. The analysis will be conducted on the basis of the semiotic framework with a focus on the theories put forth by Peirce (three components are described in the thesis: object, representamen, and interpretant) and Poyatos (division into language, paralanguage and kinesics). In this thesis, text is treated as a composite sign. Eco`s interpretative rules are utilized in the thesis, too. Thanks to the above theories, intersemiotic translation of Romeo and Juliet will be set in the context of Translation Studies. Moreover, throughout the thesis there are described some remarkable challenges concerning intersemiotic translation, such as a translation unit in intersemiotic translation or equivalence in intersemiotic translation.As a result of this analysis, some conclusions referring directly to intersemiotic translation or contributing in general to the development of Translation Studies may be drawn. It has been proved that the comparison (mainly based on Peircean theory of signs, Poyatos` model and Eco`s interpretative rules) between the source text in the form of the drama and the target text in the form of the ballet performance is attainable. In conclusions it is also noted that intersemiotic translation should become a new value in Translation Studies which needs to be a subject of further analysis.

Niniejsza praca ma na celu udowodnienie, że tłumaczenie intersemiotyczne między dwoma systemami różnymi od siebie wielopoziomowo jest możliwe. Przedmiotem analizy jest znany dramat zatytułowany Romeo i Julia. Tekst wyjściowy stanowi dramat autorstwa Williama Shakespeare`a, natomiast tekstem docelowym jest choreografia baletowa opracowana przez Kennetha MacMillana. Fragmenty opisujące gesty i ruch oraz ich tłumaczenie w balecie będą poddane szczegółowej analizie.Analiza będzie usytuowana i przeprowadzona w oparciu o badania w kontekście semiotyki ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem założeń Peirce`a (trzy czynniki składowe: przedmiot, reprezentamen i interpretant są opisane w pracy) oraz założeń Poyatosa (podział na język, parajęzyk i kinestetykę). W niniejszej pracy tekst traktowany jest jako złożony znak. Reguły interpretacyjne Eco są również wykorzystane w pracy. Powyższe teorie umożliwiają usytuowanie tłumaczenia intersemiotycznego Romea i Julii w kontekście Translatoryki. Ponadto w pracy opisane są wybrane i istotne wyzwania dotyczące tłumaczenia intersemiotycznego, w tym: jednostka przekładu w tłumaczeniu intersemiotycznym czy ekwiwalencja w tłumaczeniu intersemiotycznym.W rezultacie tej analizy można wyciągnąć wnioski odnoszące się bezpośrednio do tłumaczenia intersemiotycznego lub przyczyniające się w sposób ogólny do rozwoju Translatoryki. Zostało udowodnione, że porównanie (głównie z oparciu o Peirce`rowski model znaków, model Poyatosa i reguły interpretacyjne Eco) między tekstem wyjściowym w formie dramatu i tekstem docelowym w formie przedstawienia baletowego jest możliwe. We wnioskach zauważono również, że tłumaczenie intersemiotyczne powinno stać się nową wartością w Translatoryce, która wymaga dalszych badań.
