Wizerunek kobiety odrzuconej w wybranych współczesnych powieściach brytyjskich

The thesis is devoted to an analysis of the image of a rejected woman in selected British novels. Its major aim is exploration of the reasons why those women are rejected as well as how they manage to face the hostile reality. The thesis analyses three works written by contemporary writers: Jean Rhys’s Good Morning, Midnight, Doris Lessing’s The Summer before the Dark and Anita Brookner’s Hotel du Lac. The most striking similarity between those three books is that the heroines are more or less the same age. They are no longer young and attractive; however, they are not old enough to forget about their sexuality and appearance. The main characters - Sasha Jensen, Kate Brown and Edith Hope - contradict the overall social attitude that women over forty are less attractive and desired than younger women. However, all of the main characters are unhappy in their relationships. They tend to be submissive to their men, who do not care about their feelings and opinions, showing lack of respect towards them in numerous situations. The main characters are also not fulfilled in the roles of mothers, as they do not have families, have lost their children or are treated badly by their offspring. However, as the plots develop, all of them gain maturity and self-awareness. Yet they seem to come back to the same point where their explorations commenced. The thesis is divided into three chapters, each of them devoted to one book, starting with the novel which was published first. All of the novels depict similar issues, for example longing for acceptance, looking for love, dealing with rejection, loneliness and depression, facing hostile reality as well as the problem of ageing.

Praca jest poświęcona analizie wizerunku kobiety odrzuconej w wybranych powieściach literatury brytyjskiej. Celem analizy jest ukazanie powodόw, dla ktόrych kobiety nie są akceptowane przez społeczeństwo, w ktόrym żyją oraz ich sposoby na zmierzenie się z nieprzychylną rzeczywistością. Analiza dotyczy trzech powieści autorstwa Jean Rhys Good Morning, Midnight, Doris Lessing The Summer before the Dark i Anity Brookner Hotel du Lac.Najbardziej uderzającym podobieństwem wszystkich trzech powieści jest fakt, iż wszystkie głόwne bohaterki są mniej więcej w tym samym wieku. Nie są już młode i atrakcyjne aczkolwiek, nie są na tyle stare aby przestało im zależeć na aspekcie seksualności czy swoim wyglądzie. Sasha Jensen, Kate Brown i Edith Hope przeciwstawiają się ogólnemu poglądowi, iż kobieta powyżej czterdziestki nie jest już postrzegana jako atrakcyjna seksualnie. Wszystkie te kobiety są nieszczęśliwe w swoich związkach, będąc często poddane swoim partnerom, którzy z kolei nie troszczą się o ich uczucia czy opinie, a w wielu sytuacjach okazują brak należnego szacunku. Główne bohaterki nie są też spełnione w roli matki, ponieważ albo nigdy nie miały, bądź też straciły dziecko albo są źle traktowane przez swoje potomstwo. Na kartach powieści zdobywają one jednak dojrzałość i poczucie kim tak naprawdę są, dlatego tak zaskakujące wydają się ich decyzje, przez ktόre jeszcze raz znajdują się w punkcie wyjścia. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałόw. Każdy z nich poświęcony jest jednej książce, w sekwencji od najwcześniej opublikowanej do tej wydanej najpόźniej. Każda z powieści opisuje podobne zagadnienia, takie jak: tęsknota za akceptacją otoczenia, poszukiwanie miłości, radzenie sobie z odrzuceniem, samotnością i depresją, mierzenie się z nieprzychylną rzeczywistością i starzeniem się. Jean Rhys, Doris Lessing i Anita Brookner dotykają ponadczasowych problemόw kobiet w średnim wieku.
