Sadness covered with satire. Loneliness in "I am a cat" by Natsume Sōseki

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest analiza motywów samotności zawartych w powieści "Jestem kotem" Natsume Sōsekiego. Praca przedstawia uczucie samotności w ujęciu psychologicznym i socjologicznym oraz jego obecność w życiu autora i ludzi mu współczesnych, żyjących w dobie przemian epoki Meiji. Głównym bohaterem powieści jest kot - narrator, dlatego też szczegółowej analizie - w kontekście omawianego problemu - zostają poddane jego relacje społeczne, problem braku imienia oraz światopogląd. Następne badane zagadnienia to: alienacja innych postaci opisanych na kartach książki oraz zawarta w utworze krytyka źle pojmowanego indywidualizmu, będącego przyczyną nasilania się zjawiska samotności w społeczeństwie.

The topic of the thesis is to analyze the motives of loneliness included in the novel “I am a cat” by Natsume Sōseki.The thesis depicts the feeling of loneliness in terms of psychology and sociology, as well as its presence in the author’s and people’s lives existing along his lifetime - the time of changes in the Meiji Age. The main character is a Cat – the narrator, that’s why his social relationships, the problem of lacking name and the world outlook are deeply analyzed in the aspect of the processed problem.The next studied issue is: the alienation of the other characters described in the book and the criticism of the incorrectly perceived individualism, included in the text, leading to the increasing level of feeling lonely in the society.
