Highland robbers songs from Podhale region - The language and illustrating

My thesis is devoted to Highland robbers’ songs from Podhale region. They are a precious source of knowledge about being a highland robber and the way it was portrayed. The major goal of my diploma is to present highland robbers’ reality, their picture on the basis of numerous songs, and the analysis of the songs which shows their richness and diversity of spoken folk. My dissertation consists of four chapters. The first of them describes the language from Podhale. The second is devoted to the idea of being a highland robber in general. In this chapter I focused on the history and reasons of highland robbery in Karpaty, the ways of organising and creating highland robbers’ groups. There is also information about their attacks, entertainment, clothes, armament and choosing a leader. I also provided insight into their religiousness and relationship with highland people. In the third chapter I focused on the picture of robbers on the basis of songs. In my analysis I considered robbers’ names, their appearance, weapon, the course of robberies, their food and death circumstances. The last chapter provides the analysis of the songs language.

Moja praca została poświęcona pieśniom zbójnickim Podhala. Są one cennym źródłem wiedzy na temat tego, w jaki sposób było postrzegane zbójnictwo. Celem mojej pracy jest ukazanie zbójnickiej rzeczywistości, przybliżenie obrazu zbójników na podstawie licznie zgromadzonych tekstów pieśni, a także ich analiza, która pokazuje bogactwo i różnorodność języka folkloru słownego. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich zawiera charakterystykę gwary podhalańskiej. Drugi rozdział został poświęcony ogólnemu zagadnieniu zbójnictwa. Przedstawiłam w nim dzieje i przyczyny zbójnictwa w Karpatach, sposoby organizowania się i zawiązywania grup zbójeckich, a także informacje o napadach, zabawach, strojach, uzbrojeniu oraz o wyborze przywódcy. Zwróciłam także uwagę na religijność zbójników oraz stosunek ludności góralskiej do zbójnictwa. W trzecim rozdziale opisałam obraz zbójników na podstawie tekstów pieśni. W swojej analizie uwzględniłam m.in.: nazwy zbójników, ich wygląd, broń, przebieg zbójnikowania, pożywienie zbójników oraz okoliczności śmierci. Ostatni rozdział zawiera analizę języka pieśni zbójnickich.
