W pracy tej prezentuję wpływ staroangielskiej tradycji na współczesną sztukę. Udowadniam, że pisarze i twórcy filmowi inspirują się okresem anglosaskim bardziej niż kiedykolwiek wcześniej. Tezę tej pracy popieram różnorodnymi przykładami książek i filmów, np. The Buried Giant Kazuo Ishiguro, Gra o Tron George'a R. R. Martina, czy też filmem Jak wytresować smoka w reżyserii Deana DeBlois i Chrisa Sandersa. Badając temat wywnioskowałam, że wpływ staroangielskich tradycji jest najbardziej widoczny w dwóch gatunkach literackich, mianowicie w fantastyce oraz w powieściach historycznych.W celu zaprezentowania wpływu okresu anglosaskiego na współczesną sztukę postanowiłam skupić się na powieści The Wake napisanej przez Paula Kingsnortha wydanej w 2014 roku. Jej fabuła osadzona jest w czasach anglosaskich, tłem wydarzeń jest Bitwa pod Hastings. Książka ta przypomina kronikę napisaną przez mężczyznę gotowego bronić swojego kraju. The Wake to również studium relacji międzyludzkich oraz zwyczajów i obowiązków mieszkańców Anglii tamtej epoki. Książka ta napisana została językiem przypominającym język staroangielski, dzięki temu jest o wiele bardziej wiarygodna dla czytelników. Uważam, że The Wake trafnie potwierdza tezę tej pracy.Praca ta pomaga odkryć elementy kultury anglosaskiej we współczesnych książkach i filmach oraz docenić je jako ciekawe i pełne inspiracji dla współczesnych twórców kultury.

This thesis presents the influence of the Old English tradition on contemporary art. I argue that writers and film creators are inspired by this period more than they have ever been. I present various examples of books and movies to illustrate my claim, e.g. Kazuo Ishiguro's The Buried Giant, George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones or the movie How to Train Your Dragon directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. I have also gathered that there are two genres that have been particularly affected by the revival of the Old English, mainly historical novel and fantasy.To present the impact of the Old English period on contemporary art I decided to focus on the book The Wake written by Paul Kingsnorth and published in 2014. The plot is set in the Anglo-Saxon times; the Battle of Hastings serves as the background. The book resembles a chronicle written by an ordinary man willing to protect his country. It is a great study of the relations between people, their habits, and duties. The Wake is also written in a language resembling Old English so it is even more convincing for the readers. I find the book the perfect example to support my claim.While reading this thesis one may rediscover the Old English elements in contemporary books and movies and find them intriguing and relevant for modern creators of art.
