Laktoferyna jest białkiem występującym w płynach ustrojowych i wydzielinach śluzowych, między innymi w siarze, mleku, łzach, ślinie oraz w neutrofilach. Wykazuje ona szereg różnego rodzaju aktywności, dlatego od kilkudziesięciu lat przyciąga uwagę badaczy. Do tej pory udowodniono jej działanie immunoregulacyjne, przeciwzapalne, bakteriostatyczne, antybakteryjne, antygrzybicze oraz antywirusowe. Przypisuje się jej również działanie antynowotworowe. W poniższej pracy przedstawiono budowę i funkcje, które pełni w zależności od miejsca, w jakim jest wydzielana. Wyjaśnienie roli i mechanizmu działania aktoferyny wciąż wymaga dalszych badań. Niezwykle interesującą kwestią jest to, w jaki sposób pojedyncze białko może wykonywać szereg różnego rodzaju funkcji.

Lactoferrin is a protein found in body and secretory fluids: colostrum, milk, tears, saliva and in neutrophils. It exhibits a number of different functions, and for decades has attracted the attention of researchers. Lactoferrin has been proven to possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity so far. In addition to above mentioned functions, it has been attributed to anti-cancer activity. The structure as well as the functions, depending on the place where it is secreted were described. Clarification of the role and mechanism of action of lactoferrin still require further research. Interesting question is how a single protein can perform a number of different functions.
