Constructing Identity of the Other in J. M. Coetzees Boyhood and its Polish Translation

The goal of this master thesis is to establish the essential differences between the two language versions of John Maxwell Coetzee’s novel Boyhood. Scenes from Provincial Life, with an emphasis on the construction of the voice in the novel. The paper provides an analysis of the mechanisms in which the identity of the protagonist as the Other is shaped in the English original and its translation into Polish penned by Michał Kłobukowski. The basic question tackled in this paper concerns an examination of the ways in which the stylistic and narrative organization of the literary work may affect the reader’s reception of the text as well as the construction of the individual voice which emerges from the book. The methodological foundations of this paper are interdisciplinary, as it draws on the elements of anthropological turn in literary studies, stylistic approaches to translation, postcolonial theory, narratology and cognitive linguistics.

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest wykazanie podstawowych różnic pomiędzy dwiema wersjami językowymi powieści J. M. Coetzee Boyhood. Scenes from Provincial Life z naciskiem na konstruowanie głosu w powieści. W pracy tej dokonano analizy mechanizmów, za pomocą których w oryginale w języku angielskim oraz w tłumaczeniu na język polski autorstwa Michała Kłobukowskiego tworzona jest tożsamość głównego bohatera jako Innego. Podstawowy problem, jaki starano się rozwiązać w niniejszej pracy, dotyczy przeanalizowania tego, w jaki sposób organizacja stylu i narracji w dziele literackim może wpłynąć na recepcję tekstu przez czytelnika oraz konstrukcję indywidualnego głosu, który wyłania się z powieści. Metodologia stojąca u podstaw niniejszej pracy ma charakter interdyscyplinarny. Autorka czerpie z elementów zwrotu antropologicznego w badaniach literatury, stylistycznych badań nad przekładem, teorii postkolonialnej, narratologii oraz językoznawstwa kognitywnego.
