Witness to the 20th Century: The fortunes of Maria Czapska in the Years 1894 – 1945

Master thesis devoted to Maria Czapska – writer, translator, sensitive and attentive witness to the events of the past century. From the introductory chapter: "regardless of the work conditions – whether on a doctoral scholarship in Paris, in the burning Warsaw of the Uprising time or on the top floor at the seat of the Paris magazine Kultura – Czapska compiled biographies of characters important for the heritage of Polish Nation, wrote down memories of her contemporaries, as if continuing the work of her grandfather - Emeryk Czapski: preserving memories of the Fatherland amidst the storm of history".Due to the research method adopted (an attempt at an in-depth character study against the background of the era) and the fact that the actual disquisition is preceded by an extensive description of works and strivings of Maria Czapska’s ancestors, the starting point for this study – excluding some side threads – was adopted to be 1945.

Praca magisterska poświęcona Marii Czapskiej (1894 – 1981) – pisarce, tłumaczce, wrażliwemu i uważnemu świadkowi wydarzeń minionego stulecia. Z rozdziału wstępnego: "niezależnie od warunków pracy - na stypendium doktoranckim w Paryżu, w płonącej, powstańczej Warszawie, czy też na ostatnim piętrze w siedzibie paryskiej Kultury – opracowywała Czapska biografie postaci ważnych dla dziedzictwa Narodu Polskiego, spisywała wspomnienia jej współczesnych, jakby kontynuując dzieło dziadka – Emeryka Czapskiego: ocalając z burzy dziejowej, pamiątki Ojczyste…"Z uwagi na przyjętą metodę badawczą (próbę wnikliwego studium postaci na tle epoki) oraz poprzedzenie właściwego wywodu obszernym opisem prac i dążeń przodków Marii Czapskiej, jako cenzurę dla niniejszego opracowania - wyjąwszy wątki poboczne - przyjęto rok 1945.
