Harold Pinter. A study of silence

The thesis concerns various aspects of silence in Harold Pinter’s drama: stillness, excessive talking, concealing the truth, refusal/unwillingness to communicate, and traces of the writer’s presence in the text. The author analyses the structure of Pinter’s dialogue to uncover the meanings of what is not said but is marked with the words 'pause' or 'silence', ellipses and repetitions. She explores silent and/or absent characters and topics not discussed in dialogues, which are crucial for the development of dramatic action, and for the interpretation of Pinter’s works. The thesis presents different forms of Pinter’s silent presence in the language and structure of his works: examples of playing with theatrical conventions, metatheatrical play with the audience, autobiographical references, elements of film poetics.

Praca dotyczy różnych aspektów milczenia w dramatach Harolda Pintera: ciszy, nadmiaru słów, odmowy komunikacji, ukrywania prawdy, a także śladowej obecności autora w tekście. Autorka analizuje strukturę Pinterowskiego dialogu, odkrywając znaczenia przemilczeń oznaczanych za pomocą słów "milczenie" i "pauza", wielokropków, powtórzeń. Opisuje wykorzystanie kluczowych dla rozwoju akcji i interpretacji dramatów milczących i/lub nieobecnych postaci oraz tematów nieporuszanych w dialogach. Przedstawia formy milczącej obecności autora w języku i strukturze dramatu: przykłady gry z konwencjami teatralnymi, metateatralnej gry z widzem, wątków autobiograficznych, elementów poetyki filmu.
