Zmieniająca się sytuacja geopolityczna w strategicznym otoczeniu Japonii po II Wojnie Światowej odegrała ważną rolę w kształtowaniu powojennej strategii obrony państwa. W czasie trwania zimnej wojny dzięki sojuszowi ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi Japonia stała w konflikcie po stronie państw Zachodu. Poza 9 punktem Konstytucji, który jednoznacznie wyznaczył pacyfistyczny charakter Japonii to zarówno amerykańskie jak i japońskie doktryny polityczne miały zasadnicze znaczenie na formowanie powojennej polityki bezpieczeństwa. Natomiast głównym narzędziem w realizacji kluczowych elementów strategii obrony stało się utrzymywanie i rozwijanie Sił Samoobrony, które z narodowych rezerw policyjnych stały się jedną z najnowocześniejszych i najlepiej uzbrojonych formacji zbrojnych na świecie. Pomimo wielu problemów operacyjnych wynikających z ograniczeń konstytucjonalnych Siły Samoobrony biorą udział w wielu misjach międzynarodowych, a rząd Japonii dąży do normalizacji obecnej polityki bezpieczeństwa.
The changing of geopolitical situation in the strategic environment of Japan after the Second World War played a vital role in the shaping of the state’s post war defense strategy. During the cold war period due to the alliance with the United States, Japan was at the Western side of the conflict. Expect for the 9th article of the Constitution which clearly established a pacifist character of the Japan, both American and Japanese political doctrines have had an essential role in forming the post war security policy. Whereas the main tool in achieving key elements of defense strategy was maintaining and development of the Self-Defense Forces which from the national police reserve became one of the most advanced and best equipped military forces in the world. Despite of operational difficulties due to the constitutional limitations, Self-Defense Forces take part in many international missions and the Japanese government is committed to normalization of the current security policy.
