Obraz dzieciństwa w literaturze angielskiej: Oliver Twist, Orkan na Jamajce, Przekroczyć granice

The present thesis examines the representation of child characters in English literature over centuries, with a great emphasis laid on the gradual loss of childhood innocence. The thesis starts with a description of an ideal of the Romantic child, which is illustrated with numerous poems of the Romantics. Further on, the study compares the images of children from the books of the successive literary periods with the Romantic child. The novels that are discussed are: Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes and Border Crossing by Pat Barker. The analysis reveals that, since the eighteenth century, the portrayals of children have gradually changed. At first, children were presented as pure, innocent and virtuous; however, over time, they became more wicked, cruel and corrupt.

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza sposobu przedstawiania dzieci w literaturze angielskiej na przestrzeni wieków, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich stopniowej utraty niewinności. W pierwszym rozdziale, na podstawie wierszy angielskich poetów romantycznych, opisany został ideał dziecka epoki Romantyzmu. W dalszej części pracy znajduje się porównanie dzieci przedstawianych w kolejnych epokach literackich z wizerunkiem dziecka romantycznego. Książki, które zostały zanalizowane to: Oliver Twist Karola Dickensa, Orkan na Jamajce Richard’a Hughes’a oraz Przekroczyć granice Pat Barker. Analiza pokazuje, że ukazanie dzieci w literaturze, począwszy od XVIII wieku, uległo stopniowej zmianie. Początkowo, dzieci były przedstawiane jako czyste, niewinne i cnotliwe, jednak z czasem stały się bardziej nikczemne, okrutne oraz zdeprawowane, całkowicie tracąc swoją dziecinną niewinność.
