Amusement and entertainment in Poland and Rus` in the Middle Ages.

Przedmiotem mojej pracy jest ukazanie sposobów na spędzanie wolnego czasu przez ludzi żyjących na terenie Polski i Rusi w epoce średniowiecza. W rozdziale pierwszym opisałam szereg obchodzonych wówczas świąt, zarówno pogańskich jak i chrześcijańskich, w celu ukazania między nimi podobieństw i różnic. Rozdział drugi dotyczy miejsca, jakie na biesiadach zajmowały określone rodzaje potraw i napojów, a także porusza kwestię kultury jedzenia i picia podczas rozmaitych uroczystości. W rozdziale trzecim przedstawiłam pokrótce rolę śpiewu i tańca obecnego podczas zabaw, oraz przedstawiłam znane wówczas ludziom rodzaje gier. Ostatni, czwarty rozdział ukazuje aktywne formy wypoczynku. Do takich należą między innymi polowania i turnieje rycerskie. Rozdział ów zakończony jest przedstawieniem formy wytchnienia po wysiłku jaki stanowiła łaźnia.

The subject of my dissertation is to show various ways for the Medieval Ruthenian and Polish people to spend their free time. In chapter one I listed some holidays, pagan and Christian, and underlined similarities and differences between them. Chapter two is about position of different kinds of meals and drinks that were consumed during feasts, moreover it raises the question of the culture of feasting in celebration. Chapter three shows a few examples of songs and dance which were present at parties, and it also pictures games that entertained people in this epoch. Chapter four, the last one, presents some active ways to spend time. As an example I chose hunting and knights` tournament. This chapter ends with portraying a form of relaxation after physical extertion, which at the time was using a bath.
