IDIOMATYCZNOŚĆ W PRZEKŁADZIE: ANALIZA POLSKIEGO TŁUMACZENIA CATCH 22 JOSEPHA HELLERA

Celem tej pracy jest zbadanie tendencji deformujących w idiomatyczności zawartej zarówno w tekście źródłowym jak i docelowym na podstawie tłumaczenia książki Catch 22 Josepha Hellera w przekładzie Lecha Jęczmyka. Analiza ta obejmuje trzy aspekty:1.tłumaczenie wyrażeń idiomatycznych i utartych zwrotów przez użycie jego odpowiednika w tekście docelowym2.tłumaczenie wyrażeń idiomatycznych i utartych zwrotów w wyrażenia i zwroty nieidiomatyczne3.tłumaczenie wyrażeń nieidiomatycznych w wyrażenia idiomatyczne i utarte zwrotyw oparciu o eseju Antoine Bermana Translation and the Trials of the Foreign i zaprezentowanych w nim tendencji deformujących, czyli ennoblement, the destruction of expressions and idioms, qualitative impoverishment and vulgarisation. Deformacje te mogą być uważane za konsekwencje zarówno zastosowania przez tłumacza idiomatyczności, jak i rezygnacji z niej. Z wykonanych analiz wynika, że trzeci aspekt został najczęściej użyty, co skutkuje większą idiomatycznością tekstu docelowego, często ze zmianą znaczenia niektórych zwrotów. Można więc stwierdzić, że nawet niewierne i niedokładne tłumaczenie może zostać odebrane pozytywnie przez czytelników oraz odnieść sukces w dziedzinie literatury.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate Antoine Berman’s deformative tendencies in idiomaticity in both the source text and the target text on the basis of Lech Jęczmyk’s translation of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. The study concentrates on three aspects, namely:1.translating idioms and fixed expressions into their equivalents in the target text2.translating idioms and fixed expressions into non-idiomatic phrases3.adding idiomaticity to the target text when the source text lacks in it.The analysis has been carried out with the reference to Antoine Berman’s essay Translation and the Trials of the Foreign and deformations presented there, i.e. ennoblement, the destruction of expressions and idioms, qualitative impoverishment and vulgarisation. The deformations examined here can be regarded as the consequences of translator’s employment of idiomaticity or abstaining from it. The results indicate the third aspect being the most frequently applied and thus the translation being more idiomatic than the original, sometimes with changes in meaning of certain phrases. It can be concluded that even unfaithful and seemingly inaccurate translation can be well-received and achieve success in literary field.
