Infidelity in E. M. Forster’s Howards End and Zadie Smith’s On Beauty

This paper explores the theme of marital infidelity as one of the central problems in E. M. Forster’s Howards End and Z. Smith’s On Beauty. I present Forster’s fiction as a source of inspiration for Smith’s writing and indicate similarities between the scopes of interest of the two authors. My objective is to demonstrate the function of infidelity as the crucial factor affecting the plot, development of particular characters and relationships between them in both works. Apart from examining the role of marital unfaithfulness, I compare and contrast three character types which are presented in both novels. I study the marital situation of the main male characters of the novels, paying close attention to the factors which induced their unfaithfulness; I also investigate the consequences of their disloyalty regarding the parties involved. While analysing the female protagonists of the two novels and the process of coming to terms with the betrayal, I notice the pattern consisting of three stages: underestimation of the guilt, rejection of the spouse caused by aggravating circumstances and, finally, a conscious decision determining the future of the relationship. In my examining of the figure of a female lover, I point out two divergent heroine types employed by Forster and Smith respectively: the altruistic seductress and the ostensible femme fatale.

W niniejszej pracy skupiam się na motywie zdrady, który stanowi jeden z głównych tematów poruszonych przez Powrót do Howards End E. M. Forstera oraz O pięknie Zadie Smith. Prezentuję twórczość Forstera jako źródło inspiracji dla współczesnej autorki oraz wskazuję na podobieństwo zagadnień, które oboje poruszają w swojej twórczości. Moim celem jest wykazanie, że w obu powieściach zdrada jest głównym czynnikiem rozwoju akcji oraz wpływa w dużym stopniu na kształtowanie się postaci i relacji między mini. Poza badaniem roli niewierności małżeńskiej dla fabuły wybranych dzieł, skupiam się na porównaniu trzech typów postaci występujących w obu powieściach. Przyglądam się sytuacji małżeńskiej głównych bohaterów, zwracając szczególną uwagę na czynniki, które skłoniły ich do zdrady oraz jej konsekwencje dotyczące zdradzających i zdradzonych. Analizując postaci kobiece, dostrzegam trzystopniowy proces radzenia sobie ze zdradą: bagatelizację winy, odrzucenie małżonka spowodowane czynnikami obciążającymi, oraz ostateczną, świadomą decyzję bohaterki dotyczącą przyszłości jej związku. Przy analizie postaci kochanki wyszczególniam dwa odrębne typy bohaterek, którymi posłużyli się, odpowiednio, Forster i Smith: altruistyczną uwodzicielkę oraz pozorną femme fatale.
