Physical Distortion in Flannery O'Connor's Fiction

Flannery O'Connor należy do autorów, którzy zdefiniowali amerykańską literaturę gotycką XX wieku. Jest ona znana głównie dzięki swojej prawdziwie groteskowej i religijnej prozie. W swoich dziełach nie stroni ona od zgłębiania różnych aspektów groteski, lecz podchodzi do tego w doprawdy wnikliwy sposób. Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę aspektu dotyczącego fizycznej deformacji i aby tego dokonać, przesłanka tej pracy oparta jest na analizie trzech opowiadań oraz jednej książki Flannery O'Connor. W rzeczy samej, prawdziwie zajmujące jest to, w jaki sposób jej burzliwe życie wpłynęło na sposób w jaki tworzyła ona swoją prozę. Doświadczenie to zaowocowało bowiem kreacją świata fikcyjnego udręczonego przez fizyczną deformację. Świat ten jest nie tylko zamieszkały przez zdeformowane postacie, lecz znajdują się tam również miejsca oraz obiekty, które stanowią ostoję tejże deformacji. Celem tej pracy jest więc analiza źródeł, oddziaływania, znaczenia, oraz postrzegania przez ludzi różnych typów fizycznej deformacji.

Flannery O'Connor is one of the main authors defining Southern Gothic Literature of the 20th century, who is known mostly for her deeply grotesque and religious fiction. In her writings she does not recoil from exploring various aspects of the grotesque, in fact, she does it in a genuinely profound manner. This thesis aims at examining one of those aspects, that is, the one concerning physical distortion. In order to do that the premise of this thesis is based on the analysis of three of her short stories and one full-length book. It is indeed of great interest to see how O'Connor's turbulent life influenced her way of writing, which in turn resulted in the creation of the fictional world plagued by physical distortion. It is not only peopled by disfigured characters, as one can also find there instances of places and objects that are mainstays of physical distortion. The goal of this thesis is thus to analyse the origins, influence, meaning, and perception of different kinds of physical distortion.
