The stereotype of the Orient in the novel "Impure blood" by Borisav Stanković

Tematem pracy jest stereotyp Orientu przedstawiony w powieści Borisava Stankovicia „Nieczysta krew”. Przedmiotem analizy będzie tekst powieści, a także materiał słownikowy oraz elementy orientalne w dyskursie Borisa Stankovicia. Punktem wyjściowym badań jest językoznawcza teoria stereotypu, głównie w ujęciu Jerzego Bartmińskiego, oraz postrzeganie Orientu w kulturze europejskiej. W wyniku przeprowadzonej analizy można stwierdzić, że stereotyp Orientu w powieści zbudowany jest na binarnej opozycji „swój-obcy”, przy czym Orient ewokuje wartości negatywne. Główne cechy stereotypu Orientu to: moralna i biologiczna degeneracja, hedonizm, obcość. Tym samym widać, że stereotyp Orientu w powieści częściowo pokrywa się z stereotypem zachodnioeuropejskim. Jednocześnie w obraz Orientu nieświadomie włączone zostają elementy kultury rodzimej. Następuje przenikanie kultur: orientalnej i serbskiej.

The topic of this thesis is the stereotype of Orient presented in the novel „Impure blood” by Borisav Stanković. The subject of analysis will be text of the novel as well as dictonary material and oriental elements in the discourse of Borisav Stanković. The starting point of the research is a linguistic theory of stereotype, mainly in terms used by Jerzy Bartmiński, and perception of the Orient in European cuture. The analysis can conclude that the stereotype of the Orient is based on the binary opposition „the native-the other”, and the Orient evokes negative values. The main features of the stereotype of the Orient are: moral and biological degeneration, hedonism, alienation. Thus you can see that the stereotype of the Orient in the novel partialy overlaps with the image of the Orient created in Western Europe. At the same time elements of native culture are unconsciously incorporated in the stereotype of the Orient. It is caused by the interference of cultures: Oriental and Serbian.
