The grotesque of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) and the chosen translations of his pieces

I temi della presente tesi magistrale sono il grottesco di Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz e il rendere le caratteristiche del grottesco nelle traduzioni italiane. Nel primo capitolo viene sviluppato il tema del grottesco (le sue caratteristiche e la storia in Polonia) e viene presentata la figura del Witkacy (la sua biografia, il suo pensiero filosofico, le caratteristiche del suo grottesco e la fortuna dell’autore in Italia). Il secondo capitolo descrive il problema della traduzione dei contesti culturali, dei nomi propri e della comicità. Il terzo capitolo è analitico – esamina le strategie traduttive usate nelle traduzioni scelte e il loro impatto sul messaggio del testo.

Tematem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest groteska Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza oraz oddanie cech charakterystycznych dla gatunku w tłumaczeniach włoskich. W pierwszym rozdziale poruszony jest temat groteski (jej charakterystyka i historia w Polsce) oraz zostaje przedstawiona postać Witkacego (jego biografia, myśl filozoficzna, cechy charakterystyczne jego groteski oraz popularność autora we Włoszech). Drugi rozdział omawia problem tłumaczeń kontekstów kulturowych, nazw własnych oraz komizmu. Rozdział trzeci jest analityczny – bada strategie tłumaczeniowe zastosowane w wybranych tłumaczeniach i ich wpływ na wydźwięk tekstu.

The subject of this master’s thesis is the grotesque of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz and the method for giving the characteristics of genre in Italian translations. In the first chapter is described the grotesque (its characteristic and history in Poland) and is introduced the figure of Witkacy (his biography, philosophical conception, characteristic of his grotesque and popularity of the author in Italy). The second chapter describes the problem of transaltions of cultural contexts, proper names and humour. The third chapter is an analytic one – observes the translation strategies applied in the chosen translations and their impact on the meaning of the text.
