The Evolution of American Gangster Films

Gangster film is one of the oldest film genres. What is more, it is considered by many as typically American genre. Despite transformations, gangster film is still popular and scholars are interested in that case. The work is divided into three sections, in which the evolution of gangster figure, as well as gangster genre, is shown. The first chapter shows the theoretical concepts, the second is about the 60s, 70s and 80s, while the third is an analysis of contemporary productions. The references to the cultural and social contexts are also presented. Thanks to that, the evolution of gangster films is shown in a broader perspective, which is very important, especially from the point of view of American studies.

Film gangsterski jest jednym z najstarszych gatunków filmowych. Co więcej, wielu znawców kina uważa, że jest to typowo amerykański gatunek. Rodzaj ten, mimo przeobrażeń, cieszy się niesłabnącą popularnością, a uczeni stale poświęcają mu uwagę. Praca jest podzielona na 3 rozdziały, a każdy z nich pokazuje drogę rozwoju postaci gangstera, jak i samego gatunku. Pierwszy rozdział jest próbą przybliżenia teoretycznych pojęć, drugi obejmuje lata 60., 70. i 80. XX wieku, natomiast trzeci jest analizą współczesnych produkcji. W pracy pojawiają się odniesienia do kontekstów kulturowych i społecznych. Dzięki temu ewolucja kina gangsterskiego zostaje ukazana w szerszej perspektywie, co jest bardzo istotne, szczególnie z amerykanistycznego punktu widzenia.
