W pracy tej podjęto problem operacji osoby transseksualnej jako rytuał przejścia. Opisane zostały cechy charakterystyczne społeczeństw przed nowoczesnych i nowoczesnych, jak i ich rytuały przejścia. Podjęto także kwestię miejsca religii w nowoczesnym i przed nowoczesnym świecie. Innymi badanymi wątkami są definicje płci i transseksualizmu.
