Authority and discipline in monastic community- comparing monastic rules of Pachomy and Benedict

Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest analiza tekstu reguł monastycznych Pachomiusza oraz Benedykta z Nursji pod względem władzy w obrębie wspólnoty, funkcji i dyscypliny. Reguły te powstawały w IV – VI w. w odmiennych warunkach historycznych co miało wpływ na ich treść i formę. Reguła Pachomiusza jest pierwszą w kościele, Benedykta zaś najbardziej znaną i najpowszechniejszą. W pracy wykazano eksperymentalny charakter dzieła Pachomiusza oraz dojrzałość tekstu Benedykta, jego aktualność oraz ponadczasowość. Opisano również pochodzenie, losy oraz proces powstawania obu źródeł oraz scharakteryzowano historie badań nad nimi.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the texts of the monastic Rules of Pachomius and Benedict of Nursia from the point of view of power, the division of roles and discipline within the community. The rules were designed in the fourth to sixth centuries A.D. in different historical circumstances, which affected both their form and their content. The Rule of Pachomius was the first in the Church, the Rule of Benedict is now the best known and most common. In the dissertation, the experimental nature of Pachomius’s work was demonstrated, and the maturity, continuing relevance and timelessness of Benedict work proven. The origins, history and the process in which the two sources were developed were also discussed, as was the history of research into the subject.
