Terrorism in modern Europe - the genesis and effects of the phenomenon

In today’s Europe there are distinct groups involved in terrorist activities: organizations struggling for autonomy or independence of certain national and ethnic communities (eg. ETA), centered around the leftist ideology and radical Islamic groups. The paper presents the phenomenon of modern terrorism on the Old Continent in the years 2000-2015, with a focus on Islamic terrorism. It take attempt of the genesis of terrorism, pay attention to the historical conditions, social, political and religious. It characterize most important attacks at the beginning 21st century and their consequences. It also presents ways to prevent terrorist acts, especially in the sphere of international politics.

We współczesnej Europie istnieją różne grupy zaangażowane w działalność terrorystyczną: organizacje walczące o niezależność lub niepodległość określonych wspólnot narodowych i etnicznych (np. ETA), skupione wokół lewicowych ideologii oraz radykalne grupy islamskie. W pracy przedstawiono zjawisko nowoczesnego terroryzmu na Starym Kontynencie w latach 2000-2015, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem terroryzmu islamskiego. Podjęto próbę genezy terroryzmu, zwracając uwagę na uwarunkowania historyczne, społeczne, polityczne i religijne. Scharakteryzowano najważniejsze zamachy na pocz. XXI wieku i ich skutki. Zaprezentowano także sposoby przeciwdziałania aktom terrorystycznym, zwłaszcza w sferze polityki międzynarodowej.
