Magic, demons and apocalypse in the composition of "Historia Arcana" by Procopius of Caesarea

W Historii sekretnej Prokopiusz z Cezarei ukazuje cesarza Justyniana i jego małżonkę Teodorę jako parę demonów pragnących zguby ludzkości. Obraz ów pozostaje w ostrym kontraście z przedstawieniami pary cesarskiej w innych dziełach historyka (Wojnach oraz panegirycznych Budowlach), stąd też budzi on kontrowersje w świecie nauki. Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie, iż element demonologiczny został kunsztownie wykorzystany przez Prokopiusza jako podstawa do zbudowania inwektywy pod adresem pary cesarskiej: analiza budowy dziełka, metaforyki i słownictwa pozwala stwierdzić, że autor, opierając się na motywach mitycznych, apokaliptycznych i historycznych, konsekwentnie przedstawia Justyniana i Teodorę jako ucieleśnienie zła i przyczynę wszelkich nieszczęść w państwie.

In Historia Arcana Procopius presents the emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora as a couple of demons bent on the extinction of humankind. This picture is in sharp contrast with how the pair is presented in other works of Procopius (the Wars and panegyric Buildings), hence scholars find it controversial. The paper aims to show that the demonological element was skilfully used by Procopius as a basis to build an invective against the emperor and his wife: the analysis of the work's structure, metaphors and vocabulary proves that the author, employing mythical, apocalyptic and historical motives, builds a consistent picture of Justinian and Theodora as incarnation of evil and the reason of all the misfortunates plaguing the empire.
