Trauma i tożsamość we współczesniej literaturze brytyjskiej i irlandzkiej; Ever After Grahama Swifta, The Sea Johna Banvillea oraz A Pale View of Hills Kazuo Ishiguro

My MA thesis analyses the notions of trauma and identity on the basis of three novels of Contemporary British and Irish Fiction. It is divided into four chapters: the first one shortly outlines the theory of trauma, notions of self, identity and memory; the remaining three analyse the following novels: Graham Swift’s Ever After, John Banville’s The Sea and Kazuo Ishiguro’s A Pale View of Hills. My analysis of trauma and identity in fiction is based on a question how and to what extent trauma can influence one’s identity and how contemporary writers tend to represent it, both on the level of text and plot. All three analysed novels tell the story of identity in crisis which derives from experiencing trauma, but each one deals with it differently: the first two novels lead us through the slow and uncertain process of recovery of lost (or destroyed) identity, while the third one mimics the experience of trauma and leaves us at the very beginning of the recovery process. Therefore, my thesis analyses the notions of trauma from different angles, touching upon its most characteristic symptoms as well as the ways of working through it, simultaneously analysing the sense of identity – or “the self” – of the traumatized person.

Moja praca magisterska bada pojęcie traumy i tożsamości na podstawie trzech powieści współczesnej literatury brytyjskiej i irlandzkiej. Praca ma cztery rozdziały: pierwszy przybliża teorię traumy, pojęcie “własnego ja”, tożsamości i pamięci; pozostałe trzy analizują kolejno trzy powieści: Ever After Grahama Swifta, The Sea Johna Banville’a oraz A Pale View of Hills Kazuo Ishiguro. Moja analiza traumy i tożsamości w fikcji opiera się na pytaniu jak i do jakiego stopnia trauma może wpłynąć na tożsamość oraz jak współcześni autorzy radzą sobie z przedstawieniem tego zarówno na poziome tekstu, jak i samej fabuły. Wszystkie trzy analizowane przeze mnie powieści opowiadają o kryzysie osobowości, który jest wynikiem przeżytej traumy, ale każda radzi sobie z tym na inny sposób: dwie pierwsze powieści prowadzą nas przez niepewny proces odbudowy zatraconej (lub zaburzonej) w wyniku traumy tożsamości, podczas gdy trzecia obrazuje doświadczenie traumy i zostawia nas na samym początku takiego procesu. Pojęcie traumy jest więc w mojej pracy badane pod więcej niż jednym kątem: analizuję w niej zarówno symptomy towarzyszące traumie, jak i sposoby jej leczenia, równocześnie badając też tożsamość – lub poczucie „własnego ja” – dotkniętych traumą osób.
