Attitudes On European Integration: How do European federalists construct their Convictions? A Study of Europa-Union Members in Germany

Facing the steady increase of eurosceptic opinions hand in hand with an unprecedentedseries of economic, institutional and political crises, which have shaken the foundationof the European Union, this work engages in research on attitudes towards Europe andEuropean integration. The focus is set on activists from Germany's largest and mostinfluential citizens' initiative for Europe, the Europa-Union Deutschland (EUD).Between April and Juli 2016, thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with the goalto understand how the individuals constructed and substantiated their pro-Europeanattitudes and what distinguishes them from indifferent or euro-sceptic citizens. Theanalysis showed that value-based argumentation was dominant over utilitarian ornational-context-based factors, yet also personal experiences and certain character traitsas well as aspects related to membership in the association played an important role. Itmoreover became clear that despite the sample group's homogeneity in terms of highlypro-European attitudes and socio-economic status, their reasoning was multifaceted andcould not be reduced to a single common denominator.
