Strategies for describing Polish culturemes from the second half of the 20th century in a translation of the audio description to ”Ida

This paper examines the posibility of utilising the strategies for dealing with culture transfer problem used in translation when translating an audio description scrypt — one of alternatives for preapring a film description intened mainly for visually impaired persons. The first larger part of the paper is focused solely on the theory. It gathers definitions of audio description and cultureme, as well as it juxtaposes different classications of culturemes and provides with various strategies for translating culture-bound elements formed within the scope of both written and audiovisual translation study. The proceeding part is dedicated to analysis of each cultureme described in the analysed audio description scrypt, and demonstrates how the outlined strategies can affect the translation of a particular culure-bound element. Furthermore, the paper recognises and emphesises the complexity of the problem of cultural transfer in translation while focusing on rather uncommon study — the translation of audio description. For the analysis, "Ida” has been chosen, a film which depicts the reality of Poland from the second half of the 20th century, a period under the communist influence.

W niniejszej pracy bada się możliwość wykorzystania strategii opisu kulturemów wykorzystywanych w przekładzoznastwie w ramach przekładu treści audiodeskrypcji — jednej z alternatyw przygotowania opisu dla osób niewidzących lub słabowidzących. Praktyczną część pracy, gdzie opisano poszczególne przypadki tłumaczenia z użyciem różnych strategii poprzedza rozdział teoretyczny, w którym zgromadzono myśl naukową poświęconą definicji audiodeskrypcji, kulturemu i jego klasyfikacji, a także strategie przekładu elementów nacechowanych kulturowo wypracowane na gruncie przekładu tekstowego oraz audiowizualnego. Praca nakreśla skomplikowaną naturę problemu transferu kulturowego wynikającą z wielowymiarowości kulturemów, przyglądając się jednocześnie tejże problematyce w aspekcie najmniej dotychczas eksplorowanym, a mianowicie w ramach przekładu treści audiodeskrypcji do filmu. Na potrzeby pracy wybrano do analizy film „Ida”, którego fabułę osadzono w drugiej połowie XX wieku — okresie szczególnym dla Polski, określanym mianem PRL-u.
