A Linguist in the field of medical translation — based on authors translation of the selected chapters of Key Topics in Sports Medicine

The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether the professional translators who are not physicians are able to meet and fulfill the requirements necessary for successful translation of a medical text. The further aim of the study is to determine routes for improvement for professional translators and physicians. For the purpose of the study, two groups of reviewers were formed. Subsequently, their work was evaluated by comparing their translation solutions with the translated text. The first chapter introduces the brief history of medical translation and presents notable theories made by linguists and researchers who have been well known in the field of translation studies. The thesis then identifies desirable features of medical translators and recurring issues concerning medical translation process. The second chapter contains translation of the selected chapters. The third chapter focuses on the results of the research and summary of the data contained. The results of the research imply that professional translators are capable of producing high-quality translation product in the area of medical science. The results of the study provide support for the aforementioned statement. The author states that further education in medical and linguistic areas should be mandatory and would vastly enhance the quality of translation for both groups.

Nadrzędnym celem przeprowadzonego w tej pracy badania jest próba ustalenia, czy zawodowi tłumacze, którzy nie są jednocześnie lekarzami są zdolni do spełnienia wymogów koniecznych do skutecznego przetłumaczenia tekstu medycznego. Kolejnym celem badania jest ustalenie możliwych ścieżek rozwoju dla zawodowych tłumaczy i lekarzy zajmujących się tłumaczeniem. potrzeby badań zostały stworzone dwie grupy recenzentów. Następnie ich praca została omówiona, posługując się porównaniem ich rozwiązań tłumaczeniowych z tekstem przetłumaczonym przez autora. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiony zostaje zarys historii tłumaczenia medycznego. Czytelnik zaznajamia się z teoriami lingwistów i uznanych w omawianej dziedzinie badaczy. Następnie praca porusza problematykę pożądanych cech, które tłumacz tego rodzaju tekstów powinien posiadać oraz powszechnych przeszkód, związanych z tłumaczeniami z tej dziedziny. Drugi rozdział zawiera tłumaczenie wybranych fragmentów omawianej w pracy publikacji. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest wynikom badań i ich omówieniu. Rezultaty badań wskazują na to, iż zawodowi tłumacze zdolni są do stworzenia wysokiej jakości tłumaczenia. Według autora dalszy rozwój i poszerzanie wiedzy medycznej powinny być obowiązkowym zajęciem każdego specjalisty i z pewnością przyczyniłyby się do polepszenia jakości tłumaczenia wśród obu grup.
