The Character has Spoken: Matthew Kneales “English Passengers” in a Polish Translation

Celem mojej pracy było zbadanie wpływu tłumaczenia na sposób, w jaki postać będąca jednocześnie narratorem powieści jest postrzegana przez czytelnika. Moja analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie narracji Peevay'a, głównego bohatera książki Anglicy na pokładzie autorstwa Matthew Kneale'a. Charakterystyczny styl postaci jest swoistą auto-prezentacją, dzięki której czytelnik poznaje jej historię i poglądy, jak również źródła jej języka. Ten obraz zmienia się nieco w polskim tłumaczeniu.Moja praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym rozdziale prezentuję biografię autora oraz odbiór Anglików na pokładzie w krajach anglojęzycznych i w Polsce. W rozdziale drugim zebrane zostały teorie dotyczące archaizacji i punktu widzenia w literaturze. Analiza języka Peevay'a w oryginale i w polskim tłumaczeniu została przeprowadzona w rozdziale trzecim. Konkluzje zawierają porównanie stylu oryginału i tłumaczenia, z uwzględnieniem celów, jakie kierowały autorem i tłumaczem powieści.

The aim of my thesis was to examine how a translation may alter the way a character who is also the first-person narrator presents himself to the reader. The study is based on the novel by Matthew Kneale, entitled English Passengers, and the narration by the book's protagonist, Peevay. The character's idiosyncratic style is self-representative, giving the reader much information about his life, views and the sources of his language. In the Polish translation this image seems to be altered.My thesis consists of three chapters. In the first chapter I present the author's life and works, focusing on the reception of English Passengers in English-speaking countries and in Poland. The second chapter comprises several approaches on archaisation and point of view in a narrative. An analysis of Peevay's language in the original and the Polish translation is conducted in the third chapter. In conclusions I compare the style of the original and the translation, taking into consideration the aims of the author and the translator.
