The two-hundredth anniversary of the Relief of Vienna 1883 in Polish medallic art

This research concerns medals which were produced to commemorate the two-hundredth anniversary of the Relief of Vienna 1883. In accordance with the title, only Polish medals are considered. The first chapter concentrates on a presentation of the definition of medallic art, its position in historical research as well as a short history of Polish medallic art up to 1914. In the second chapter, the patriotic celebrations in Kraków during annexations are described in detail. In turn, the third and the fourth chapters are closely related to the two-hundredth anniversary of the Relief of Vienna. The celebrations of 1883 in Kraków, Lwów and Poznań are shown in the third chapter, while the fourth is devoted to medals and issues connected with them. An important part of the research is the catalogue, which presents the division of medals into types and varieties.The purpose of the research is to show the importance of medals as background to celebrations, to present and compare their iconography and inscriptions, as well as to indicate model objects used in the process of their design. Additionally, the aim of the research is to report on the function of medals, provide a characterisation of the medallists who created them, as well as showing ways of increasing the market in medals, and identifying buyers and places where it is possible to buy them.

Praca jest związana z problematyką medali wykonanych z okazji dwusetnej rocznicy odsieczy wiedeńskiej (1883). Zgodnie z jej tytułem, podczas rozważań, zostały wzięte pod uwagę wyłącznie medale polskie. W rozdziale pierwszym została przedstawiona definicja medalierstwa i jego miejsce w badaniach historycznych, a także zarys dziejów medalierstwa polskiego do 1914 r. Z kolei w rozdziale drugim ukazano specyfikę uroczystości patriotycznych w Krakowie w okresie zaborów. Natomiast rozdział trzeci i czwarty traktuje już tylko o kwestiach związanych z dwusetną rocznicą odsieczy wiedeńskiej. W trzecim opisano przebieg uroczystości „wiedeńskich” w Krakowie, Lwowie i Poznaniu, a w czwartym poświęcono miejsce medalom i związanym z nimi problemom. Ważną częścią pracy jest katalog, w którym został dokonany podział medali na typy i odmiany.Celem pracy jest ukazanie znaczenia omawianych medali na szerokim tle uroczystości, przedstawienie i porównanie ich ikonografii oraz legend, a także wskazanie obiektów, które mogły być wzorem podczas tworzenia ich projektów. Ponadto celem pracy jest charakterystyka funkcji omawianych medali, przybliżenie postaci medalierów zaangażowanych w ich wykonanie, przedstawienie metod które miały zwiększyć szanse na sprzedaż jak największej liczby medali, a także wskazanie ich odbiorców oraz miejsc w których można było je nabyć.
